The WitheringTHE ART OF ACCOMPANYING ENDINGS
At The Threshold Between Worlds
For much of my life, death was something I instinctively wanted to avoid. When relatives or family friends approached the final curtain, I didn't know what to say, what to do, or how to sit alongside the enormity of what was happening. Yet somewhere along the way, something changed. Through my shamanic training with Northern Drum, the deaths of friends and accompanying my own father towards the end of his life, I found myself moving towards the very threshold from which I once retreated. Looking back, perhaps this should not surprise me. I have spent much of my life exploring the margins — those places between what has been and what is yet to become. The work I once understood principally as accompanying people from separation towards belonging now extends towards life's greatest threshold of all. Perhaps what I once feared is becoming something I am being called to serve. As a Guardian Of The Threshold, my role is not to determine when an ending has arrived, nor to claim certainty about what lies beyond it, but to accompany another human being through that territory. |
How The Withering UnfoldsTHE CROSSING · THE HOMECOMING · THE RESURRECTION
The Withering is compassionate companionship through dying, death and the changed landscape that follows. Rather than a prescribed programme, it responds to the individual and those closest to them, unfolding through three interconnected movements.
The Crossing is the time for dotting the i's and crossing the t's. For exploring what remains unfinished, what needs to be said, celebrated, forgiven, resolved or prepared before death arrives. It may involve conversation, reflection, nature, spiritual support or simply creating the space for somebody to consider how they wish to approach the final chapter of their life. The Homecoming accompanies the dying process itself. Here the emphasis may move from doing towards being: presence, witnessing and, where desired, appropriate spiritual or ceremonial support. My shamanic training also included the ancient practice of Psychopomp — accompanying the soul through its transition from one existence into another. The Resurrection belongs to those left behind. It is not the resurrection of the person who has died, but the gradual re-emergence of those who remain — supporting them as grief begins to reveal a changed life and they discover who they are within it. The Withering sits alongside, appropriate medical, nursing, hospice and bereavement care. I offer companionship, listening, witnessing, nature connection and spiritual support where wanted — bringing my presence as The Conductor to perhaps the most profound transition we are ever asked to face. If you or someone you love is approaching the end of life, perhaps the first step is simply a conversation. |
